Description of The Stewart Hall Art Gallery
Even before the establishment of an official art gallery, the third floor attic space in the old MacLean House was used to mount occasional exhibitions of art. Then, in 1963, with the assistance of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Director Dr. Evan Turner; Jean-Paul Morisset, Director of Extension Services of the National Gallery of Canada; and Professor Winthrop Judkins of McGill University and his wife, Helen Judkins, a formal mandate and set of policies were established, and the Stewart Hall Art Gallery opened its doors to the public. Since then, the Gallery has become renowned for its diverse programming of exhibitions from the local, national and international arts communities.
The Stewart Hall Art Gallery is proud of its history and its role as a municipal art gallery in the Pointe-Claire Cultural Centre. As its reputation continues to grow, the gallery is prepared to meet the challenges of the new millennium.
Mandate of the Gallery
Established in 1963, the Stewart Hall Art Gallery is a municipal art gallery located in the cultural centre of the city of Pointe-Claire. The mandate of the gallery is to present high quality exhibitions of historical and contemporary art that reflect the diverse nature of the West Island and Montreal communities.
The gallery features travelling exhibitions of collections from museums across Canada, the United States, and around the world, as well as works by both emerging and established Quebec and Canadian artists. The exhibitions are held on a five or six week rotating schedule throughout the year, and offer an exploration into a wide variety of themes and media, including painting, prints, photography and sculpture.
As part of the cultural centre, the gallery has the opportunity to reach a diverse public audience. Events such as La journée de la culture, Cultural Rendez-vous and Montreal Museums Day help people of all ages focus on art and cultural activities.
The gallery is staffed by art professionals who are responsible for the selection and presentation of each exhibit. There is an ongoing educational program with local schools and community groups that include gallery visits and activities designed for children of all ages. Lectures and artists' talks are a regular feature at the gallery.
The gallery purchases and maintains a permanent collection of contemporary Canadian art for the city of Pointe-Claire that is on display in municipal buildings and offices. The gallery also operates an art rental and sales service, and a small boutique that offers a selection of decorative crafts and objects d'art.
The gallery is open seven days a week (closed weekends in the summer) from 1 to 5 p.m. and Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free, and the gallery is accessible by elevator.
