Description of Centre Kims Tae Kwon Do
Before I get into the history of Taekwondo, I would like to define what it means. I read the definition from many books and the one that I like best comes from the book Comprehensive Asian Fighting Arts (1) written by Donn F. Draeger and Robert W. Smith. "Taekwondo is an empty-hand combat form that entails the use of the whole body. Tae means "to Kick" or "Smash with the feet," Kwon implies "punching" or "destroying with the hand or fist," and Do means "way" or "method." Taekwondo thus, is the technique of unarmed combat for self defense that involves the skillful application of techniques that include punching, jumping kicks, blocks, dodges, parrying actions with hands and feet. It is more than a mere physical fighting skill, representing as it does a way of thinking and a pattern of life requiring strict discipline. It is a system of training both the mind and the body in which great emphasis is placed on the development of the trainee's moral character."
Instructors
Dennis Kim
Master Dennis Kim, 5th dan black belt, has been practicing Taekwondo for over 20 years. He travelled to South Korea on many occasions to attend training camps, where he further developed his knowledge of Taekwondo philosophy, and enhanced his technique. His dedication to the art has earned him the five-time title of Canadian national champion, a silver medal at the Pan-American Taekwondo Championships, and he is three-time Olympic carding champion.
Having participated in a number of Olympic sparring competitions and championships, his ability to analyze an opponent’s movements is invaluable to coaching students who wish to compete, as well as students looking to improve their self-defence skills. He has organized and taught special classes designed to prepare colour and black belt students for sparring competitions and improve their cardiovascular endurance. His extensive skill, knowledge and experience of the art make him an invaluable asset to his pupils and students in their success in the art.
Kyue seon Song
Kyue seon Song is a Tae Kwon Do Master who has been practicing the traditional form of Korean martial arts for twenty years. He served in the Korean Military Service from 2000 to 2002, and was also a Tae Kwon Do instructor in the army.
Since 2002 he has been teaching at Kim’s Tae Kwon Do School where he specializes in poomse (hyung), a sequence of movements sometimes called "imaginary fighting" as it involves pre-determined and choreographed routines, sequences and patterns which resemble real combat.
